In our journey of faith, we often hear the terms “purpose” and “calling” used interchangeably. However, it’s essential to recognize that while they are related, they serve distinct roles in our lives as believers. Our unified purpose is clear: to seek the Kingdom of Heaven and live in relationship with God. This overarching purpose shapes every aspect of our existence and guides our choices, interactions, and daily endeavors.
Understanding Our Purpose
Our true purpose in life is to cultivate a deep, personal relationship with God. This relationship is nourished through learning the incredible teachings of the Bible and applying them to our everyday lives. Every encounter we have—whether at work, in our relationships, or in how we love and forgive—becomes an opportunity to reflect God’s love and grace.
The Bible serves as our ultimate guide on how to live life and do life with God. It offers wisdom on how to spend our time, energy, and resources, reminding us that our lives should be a testament to our faith. In Matthew 6:33, we’re reminded to ‘seek first the kingdom of God and HIS righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.’ This verse emphasizes our purpose: to put our relationship with God at the top of our priorities.
The Call of God
While we all share the same purpose, God calls us to specific actions throughout our lives—these are our callings. He may call you to great acts of service or significant life changes. However, He may also prompt you to perform small acts of kindness, like putting away the grocery cart instead of leaving it in the parking lot. Every calling, big or small, holds value in the Kingdom of God.
God promises us that “He qualifies the called” (1 Corinthians 1:27). He equips us with the tools and abilities we need to fulfill His call on our lives. Yet, we often struggle with trusting in His plan, leaning on our understanding rather than His. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
The Choice to Trust
Choosing to trust God is a continuous journey. We must make this choice repeatedly—trust over doubt, trust over fear, trust over anxiety, and trust over unbelief. This is where the Word of God becomes our weapon against the challenges we face. Isaiah 54:17 reassures us: “No weapon formed against you shall prosper!.” When we remember that God has declared a plan for good in our lives, as stated in Jeremiah 29:11, we can move forward with confidence.
If you are called, you are equipped. If you are called, then you are qualified. God has gone before you, clearing the path even when it seems unclear. He invites you to trust Him enough to follow His lead, even without 100% assurance of the outcome. This journey of faith is not about certainty; it’s about obedience and trust.
As you navigate your journey, take a moment to pause and pray. Ask yourself: ‘What is God calling me to do in this season of my life?’ Present your heart to Him in prayer, seeking clarity and guidance, just as Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ Open your ears to hear His voice and your heart to receive His direction. Trust that through prayer and petition, God will reveal the next steps He wants you to take, leading you toward His perfect plan for your life.
Embrace the understanding that both your purpose and your callings are vital in living out your faith authentically. The next time you feel that tug on your heart to act—whether it’s a significant change or a simple act of kindness—answer that call with trust.
Let your faith guide you, remembering that God has equipped you for every good work He has prepared for you. Take a step today—pray for clarity, seek guidance in Scripture, and be open to the ways He is leading you.
